AI leadership

AI Leadership, Without the Hype

The honest view on what AI means for the people running businesses, from a practitioner, not a futurist. I'm Ross Boardman: fractional CTO, founder of Boardman, host of AI Won't Save Us, and one of the UK's most candid voices on AI at leadership level.

BOOK ROSS TO SPEAK

The thesis: AI won't save us

AI leadership is not about the technology. It is about the judgement of the people deploying it. That is the argument behind everything I do, and it cuts both ways.

Against the hype: AI will not fix a broken business. It will not rescue a confused strategy, paper over a weak team, or substitute for knowing what your business is actually solving for. Businesses that bolt AI onto dysfunction just reach the wrong answer faster, at greater cost, with more confidence.

Against the dismissal: this is the most significant technology shift of my 25-year career, and sitting it out is not a strategy either. The gap that matters is not between businesses that use AI and businesses that do not. It is between businesses led well through it and businesses led badly through it.

So AI leadership, as I practise and teach it, means three things: understanding what the technology genuinely can and cannot do, picking the few places it moves your business rather than the fifty places it makes a demo, and being honest with your people about what changes. None of that is a technology problem. All of it is leadership.
